Glossary

The translation effort must be done in an orderly way, preceded by the development of a Glossary of computer terms used in the user interface and in the applications. Once the Glossary is developed, all translators will use the same terms when translating software and user manuals.

Specific lists of words for Glossaries exist already in English for several application, the Glossary will have to include all those words and expressions.

The first two months of the project have been dedicated to work on this glossary.

Two recently graduated Khmer computer scientists, Keo Sophon and Seth Chanratha, started by doing reverse engineering glossary construction has been started by KhmerOS. They started looking at existing magazines, manuals and guides about computing in Khmer. They listed all the computer “jargon” and expressions used in Khmer in these publications, together with an English translation.

After completing this first task, they took some glossaries as examples of word lists (in particular an English-Catalan glossary and the Gnome Glossary) and completed a first list of about 1,500 terms. They included in the list all reasonable possible translations for each terms, without deciding which was the correct option.

This first version of the glossary was handed to Khmer linguists and high level computer science professors, who decided which were the most correct terms. This first correction and at first meeting to study closely some of the key terms (file, folder, etc...) have led to a second version of the Glossary, and a new review will lead to a third one.

The next step is to have the Glossary reviewed for consistency by a professional translator, as well as the creation of a Khmer-Khmer computer dictionary.
