Independently of the
translation of user manuals, it is necessary to develop training
modules that will help accelerate the training of end-users for the new system.
Specific license-free training modules and training materials should be available
at the time the project is launched. The modules will be used
by private and public training centers, facilitating their labor and
assuring the quality of the training. They should be in the
public domain and easily available through the Internet (there is no
need to provide printed copies).
Training is addressed to primary needs. Easy to use applications
that are not related to work do not need to have training modules
(such as video or music programs). Conference modules and user
documentation should be more than enough, as usually the use of
these applications are taught on a friend-to-friend basis.
Each
training module should comprise:
-
Transparencies.
-
Teacher support notes.
-
Student booklet.
The
following training modules are necessary:
1.
Introduction to User
Interface (10 hours).
2.
Introduction to Word
Processing (10 hours).
3.
Advanced use of word
Processing (10 hours).
4.
Typing Skills (10
hours).
5.
Introduction to
Spreadsheet (10 hours).
6.
Advanced use of
Spreadsheet (10 hours).
7.
Introduction to
Presentation Tool (10 hours).
8.
Advanced use of
Presentation Tool (10 hours).
9.
Development of
Databases (30 hours).
10.
Internet Navigation (5
hours).
11.
E-mail (two modules x
5 hours).
12.
Introduction to the
Graphic Editor (15 hours)
13.
Introduction to web
development tools (10 hours)
14.
Intermediate web
development (20 hours).
Training materials in Khmer, as well as teaching expertise and
self-teaching books exist for MS Office in Khmer, and some training
materials, paper as well as computer-based exist for the user
interface as well as for some of the applications included in this
project.
It is
important that all these materials are developed using the same
terminology included in the Glossaries developed for the project.
The
preparation of these materials would be contracted to training
specialists who impart some of these courses for MS Office programs
at present. Materials should be tested before they are released.
A
basic 30 hours course combining the system, word processing and
spreadsheets modules should be prepared, in order to have a course
where user will start to use the computer right away.
For
budgetary purposes, it is considered that –in the average- it takes
two and half persons/month to develop a 10 hour training module,
formatting it and creating the documents, testing it with students
and including necessary changes in a second version of the modules.
The
above considerations do not take into account the development of
computer-based training systems. Computer-based systems should be
developed for the basic Offimatic courses (65 hours) as well as for
the typing skills module. A separate budget is included for this
purpose.
Even if the basic
installation of the system should be very easy, a training module
for system vendor personnel should be prepared, including advanced
installation, parameterization and personalization of the software.
This course could also be imparted to software development company
employees as well as university teachers and students.
The
preparation of this course requires expert knowledge. It should be
developed by an engineer that acquires deep knowledge of Linux,
Gnome and some of the applications. This engineer would probably
need to be trained outside of Cambodia.
For a more advanced use
of the system and for the development of specific applications (such
as for government use), System Engineers require a higher level of
training to know how to develop and how to use the specific
development tools included or accessible from this system, including
the Khmer Script support development libraries.
This “very” advanced use
of the system is usually given using English language materials, and
the receptors usually have a good command of the English language,
so the courses could be offered in English. It is not clear that
such modules need to be specifically developed, as they already
exist in English for many different specific trainings.
No
training courses need to be developed. Nevertheless, necessary
courses should be censed, as well as corporations that may provide
them. Cambodian companies would be favoured.
These modules are
oriented to trainers who already have experience teaching MS Windows
and MS Office. They are hands-on modules through which trainers will
become familiar with Gnome, OpenOffice and the other packages
included in the system, at the same time that they become familiar
with the End-user Training Modules developed within this project.
They should be very schematic, making the trainers follow the basic
courses at an accelerated speed at the same time that the
compatibility of advanced functions between MS Office and OpenOffice
are explained. A six month effort of a training expert is budgeted.
